Overview
What is automotive fuel ethanol testing – is 15464:2022?
Chem-Tech Laboratories has facility for testing anhydrous ethanol intended for use as a blending component in motor gasoline as per IS 15464:2022 (First Revision). The service is positioned specifically for the Indian automotive-fuel market and is suitable for quality control, supplier verification, receipt inspection, batch assessment and specification-conformance requirements.
Chem-Tech does not position this service as ASTM D4806 testing. Test methods, limits and reporting are aligned to IS 15464:2022 and the laboratory's available facility and current approved scope.

Programme guidance
Why automotive fuel ethanol quality matters
Ethanol quality
The ethanol supplied for motor-gasoline blending must satisfy the compositional and quality requirements specified in IS 15464:2022.
Moisture control
Anhydrous ethanol requires controlled water content because moisture pickup during production, transport or storage can affect fuel quality and blending behaviour.
Contaminant control
Acidity, inorganic contaminants, sulphur, copper and other specified characteristics are relevant to storage, handling and fuel-system compatibility.
Batch traceability
Independent laboratory testing provides batch-specific evidence for producers, suppliers, terminals, blenders and receiving organisations.
Testing scope
Automotive ethanol testing packages
| Requirement | Typical application | Chem-Tech approach |
|---|---|---|
| Complete IS 15464:2022 testing | Automotive fuel ethanol batch or supplier conformance | Complete applicable Table 1 test-characteristic panel as per IS 15464:2022, subject to confirmed facility scope |
| Incoming quality verification | Tanker, batch or storage receipt | Selected IS 15464:2022 identity and critical quality parameters based on the customer's receipt-control plan |
| Periodic supplier monitoring | Routine ethanol sourcing programme | Repeatable IS 15464:2022-based panel for comparison of batches and suppliers |
| Quality investigation | Unexpected moisture, contamination, blending or storage concern | Targeted IS 15464:2022 parameters combined with traceable reference and location-specific samples |
For formal conformance, the requested scope should reference IS 15464:2022 and any applicable amendments. Chem-Tech can confirm the parameter-by-parameter test facility before sample submission.

Sampling and sample information
Anhydrous ethanol is hygroscopic and can absorb moisture during sampling and storage. Representative sampling and tightly controlled sample handling are therefore important to obtaining meaningful results.
- Identify the material as anhydrous ethanol for blending in motor gasoline and state that testing is required as per IS 15464:2022.
- Record supplier, batch, tanker or compartment, storage tank and date of sampling.
- Use a clean, dry, tightly sealed and compatible sample container to minimise moisture pickup and contamination.
- Keep tanker/delivery samples separate from receiving-tank samples when investigating a quality difference.
- State whether complete IS 15464:2022 conformance or selected Table 1 parameters are required.
Programme guidance
For ethanol blending and automotive fuel quality programmes
The page is specifically intended for anhydrous ethanol used as a blending component in motor gasoline in India. IS 15464:2022 is therefore presented as the governing service specification rather than ASTM D4806. This keeps the laboratory capability statement aligned with the testing facility available at Chem-Tech.
Where a problem appears after ethanol has been blended into gasoline, submit the ethanol component, gasoline component and final blended fuel separately wherever possible. Component-level testing helps distinguish an ethanol-quality issue from gasoline quality, blend-ratio error, water pickup or storage contamination.

Technical review
Common condition and contamination concerns
Water and sediment
Water, suspended matter and sediment can affect storage quality and should be reviewed using the agreed fuel-testing scope.
Density and composition
Density and composition-related results support comparison with the applicable fuel grade or customer specification.
Volatility and flash characteristics
Distillation and flash-point testing support review of volatility, handling and possible cross-contamination.
Specification compliance
The reported parameters should be evaluated against the specification identified before testing.
Published laboratory capability
Tests and test methods
The methods below are matched to Chem-Tech's controlled technical test lists and published laboratory capability. The final scope is confirmed for the sample, specification and current laboratory capability.
| Test / parameter | Published test method | Technical purpose | Interpretation / high-low context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appearance | CTP T 112 | Records the visible condition and colour of the submitted sample. | Unexpected haze, sediment, separation or colour change may indicate contamination, degradation or sample-handling effects; compare with the product reference. |
| Density / Specific Gravity | ASTM D1298 / ASTM D4052 | Measures mass per unit volume and supports product identification or specification review. | A result above or below the applicable range may indicate product mixing, contamination, composition change or an incorrect grade. |
| Water Content | ASTM E203 / ASTM D1744 / ASTM D6304 | Quantifies water or moisture in the submitted material. | A higher result may indicate ingress, condensation, storage or handling contamination; significance depends on the product and applicable limit. |
| Total Acid Number | ASTM D664 / ASTM D974 | Measures acidic constituents under the selected method. | An increase from the reference may support oxidation or acidic-contamination review; a single result must be compared with product and service history. |
| Sulphur Content | ASTM D4294 | Quantifies sulphur in the submitted fuel or material. | A higher result may affect specification compliance, emissions-related requirements or process suitability; compare with the identified grade. |
Before dispatch
Sample-submission guidance
- Use a clean, secure and appropriately labelled container.
- Provide the sample identity, fluid grade and equipment or system details where applicable.
- Share operating hours, maintenance history, the suspected problem and required specification where available.
- Contact Chem-Tech before dispatch so the laboratory can confirm the sample quantity, container and selected testing scope.
Technical output
Reporting and interpretation
The report records results and methods for the agreed scope. Customer-supplied limits or specifications can be considered when provided before testing.
Results should be reviewed with equipment history, operating conditions and previous data; a laboratory result alone does not guarantee a root-cause diagnosis or remaining service life.
