Technical perspective
AdBlue, Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) and AUS 32 are used by Selective Catalytic Reduction systems to reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions. SCR dosing equipment and catalysts are sensitive to fluid composition and contamination, so quality cannot be judged from appearance alone.
ISO 22241-1 specifies quality characteristics for AUS 32 and ISO 22241-2 specifies test methods for its quality characteristics. The applicable edition and any customer, OEM or national requirements should be confirmed when the test scope is agreed.

The fluid is more than a urea percentage
Correct urea concentration is fundamental, but an acceptable concentration does not prove that every impurity is controlled. Identity, refractive index or density, alkalinity, biuret, aldehydes, insoluble matter, phosphate and specified trace elements can each address a different quality or contamination risk.

Why trace contamination matters
AUS 32 is handled through tanks, pumps, containers and dispensing equipment. Incompatible materials, dirty transfer equipment, tap water, process chemicals or previous products can introduce contaminants at levels that are not visible. The fluid may still look clear while being unsuitable for the intended SCR system.

Select the test scope from the decision
Production release
Use the applicable specification package and documented quality-control plan.
Incoming inspection
Confirm identity and critical quality characteristics against purchase and OEM requirements.
Field failure
Add contamination-focused tests and compare with a retained or known-good sample where available.
Storage investigation
Review handling materials, water ingress, temperature exposure, deposits and sample history.

Check the current standard before contractual use
ISO lists the 2019 editions of ISO 22241-1 and ISO 22241-2 as published standards, while newer revisions are under development in 2026. Procurement specifications, regulatory submissions and OEM investigations should therefore identify the exact edition or requirement being applied instead of citing only the standard family name.

AdBlue quality for Indian BS VI fleets
AdBlue is now a routine operating fluid for many BS VI commercial vehicles and off-highway SCR applications in India. Because the dosing system is sensitive to product quality and contamination, purchasing a product labelled as AdBlue should not be the only control where a quality concern exists.
The laboratory scope should be matched to the applicable current ISO 22241 requirement and the specific complaint. Urea concentration, identity and selected impurity parameters answer different questions, so the investigation should start with the product source, storage history and SCR-system symptoms.
